“we will be gone before you notice” or “3rd St. 1991 eastside MKE”

we will always have these alleys
for dreaming & tears
Corey Applehead, Black Ass Nigel
and 2 for 15
the first fist fights
“lying to kick it”
weed, liquor, lawnmowers
on the hustle
the time when we believed
what they told us
sure that these friends
this summer would last forever
before he shot him
before she told
when we were young men
running from strays
into the arms of these alleys
we shared
darkness, aloneness
the tormented worries of latch key
hungry bellies, dirty faces
habits of speech

“you know what I am saying?”

when you didn’t
we are those alleys
the veins that branched the blocks together
rooted deep in the filth forgotten black top faces
forged from these alleys
time will take some of us up-state
some of us won’t survive
these alleys
but when they talk of this time
these days
these nights
these alleys will remember us…
and hold hands tight
“behind the houses”
in our memory.
